Shinan county composed of islands holds an annual Skate Festival in Heuksan-island with skates which is our country's leading seafood and represents the most local and regional culture.
Skate festival has various hands-on events including marine parade on the ship, cooking with skates, ritual for a big and safe catch of fish, singing contest, participation events, and so on that tourists and residents can be together and participate in. In addition, as subsidiary events, many exhibitions such as Heuksan Skate Exhibition, Skate Tasting, street photography exhibition and other displays of special fishery products produced in Heuksan-island are held and fishery products are sold. Various food marketplaces are run as well.
The offshore of Heuksan-island where Heuksan skates are caught is deeper than 80m and deep in the blackish blue sea, there are lots of mud flats which are the perfect places for spawning of skates. The skates caught in this area are the best in terms of bodily nutritions and the flesh is plump and firm and you can taste the best skate here.
